Learn how to use rhythm and movement activities to positively support the development of self-regulation and underlying brain connections in young children.
The development of self-regulation in early childhood is related to children’s ability to pay attention, recover from negative experiences, their learning and progress in school, and lifelong well-being. Researchers have shown that rhythm and movement enhances children’s learning and development and can help them develop and manage self-regulation of their emotions, attention and behaviour.
This workshop explores how children develop the ability to move rhythmically to music and external rhythms (beat synchronization), and the cognitive benefits of music participation. Participants will learn about the free and open-access early years program resource Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation (RAMSR). The workshop includes opportunities for hands-on practice of rhythmic games and strategies that require no prior music experience or training, and very few resources to implement with young children.
